PRESIDENT
FUNDING ABORTIONS OVERSEAS- The Administration has notified the House and Senate that the President will veto the Foreign Operations Appropriations bill if it allows for the funding of organizations that promote or conduct abortions. The Statement of Administration Policy said, "NOTE: "The Administration strongly opposes this legislation because it includes provisions that are inconsistent with the Administration's international family planning policy. Consistent with the President's letter of May 3, 2007, if the President were presented a bill such as H.R. 2764 that weakens current Federal policies and laws on abortion, he would veto the bill."

THE HOUSE
Rep. Wamp and AMG officials CONGRESSMAN ZACH WAMP - This past week an event was held at the Heritage Foundation centered around my new book, The Pledge, One Nation Under God. Because the vice president in charge of publishing at AMG came to Washington, DC for the event, I made an appointment to visit his congressman, Zach Wamp (R-TN) to deliver petitions favoring the Pledge Protection Act.

We met Congressman Wamp in the Rayburn Room of the Capitol just off the floor of the House Chamber because he was voting at the time. After our visit Congressman Wamp took my guests to the Rotunda and talked to them about the Christian symbolism in some of the large murals. It was an extraordinary event to have a congressman giving citizens historical references to "under God" in the Pledge. Click here for Rotunda photograph showing Congressman Wamp in front of portrait of the Baptism of Pocahontas.

THE SENATE
Senator Corker with AMG officials Senators Corker and Alexander Appointments were arranged last week to visit with Senators Alexander and Corker of Tennessee to deliver petitions supporting "under God" in the Pledge. AMG, the publisher of The Pledge, One Nation Under God, is located in Tennessee. Both Senators accepted CD's containing the names and addresses of those in Tennessee who had signed the petition. The actual paper petitions were saved for delivery to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Click here for photo of Senator Corker and AMG's Dale Anderson.

DEMOCRATS PUSH ABORTION - Senator Brownback (R-KS) successfully offered an amendment to reinstate the Kemp-Kasten provision (regarding forced or coerced abortions) to the Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill. Unfortunately, the bill contained language by Democrat Senator Barbara Boxer that greatly undermined the Mexico City Policy which prohibits funding to organizations that promote abortion. The language makes international family planning "in-kind" contributions available to foreign organizations that promote and/or perform abortions. Senator Brownback offered a second amendment to strike this language but it failed 41-53. The President has stated he will veto the bill if it allows funding of pro-abortion groups.
